Overview
Scottsdale Baby Boomers have expertise, commitment, and vitality that can serve our community well. Scottsdale Boomerz capitalizes on these talents and skills and increases corporate and civic engagement. Boomerz utilizes the significant contributions of more than 100 volunteers and 10 collaborative community partners. Scottsdale Boomerz’ mission is to energize and empower baby boomers, businesses and the community to fully utilize the talents, energy, and experience of boomers to address the challenges and opportunities to be faced with the coming demographic shift. Re-careering
Scottsdale Boomerz provides outplacement, a job bank in partnership with Jobing.com, job fairs and retirement planning services to organizations in support of their human resource needs. We help companies find experienced personnel, departing employees find new career opportunities, and retiring employees plan for the next chapter of their lives.
Retirement Planning
The Retirement Planning Program helps those persons who are nearing retirement answer the question “what’s next?” by providing them with information, utilizing workshops and coaching, that will enable them to clarify their vision and develop a practical plan.
The Social Entrepreneurs’ Center
The Social Entrepreneurs’ Center is an off-shoot of Scottsdale Boomerz, a project that seeks to maximize baby boomers’ contributions to the social good. The mission of the Center is to spark interest in social entrepreneurial activities and facilitate their implementation by developing a Social Entrepreneur’s Network that will meet monthly to help spark ideas and provide information in the areas of funding and marketing; recruiting potential social entrepreneurs; sponsoring innovation competitions and giving awards; facilitating private/public partnerships; providing information regarding community needs; help build support structures tailored to each project’s needs; measuring long-term results from projects. One of the first projects developed under this initiative is the Developing Countries Success Initiative for experienced boomers who still want to change the world by becoming cyber-consultants. The objective of this project is to match talented, experienced baby boomers with developing countries' needs through their ministries, NGOs and private businesses, in an e-mail and/or phone cyber-consulting relationship. The developing country's representative will complete a request of the type of support they need and post it on our web site. Talented boomers with the skills and desire to assist this country can both list their resume and experience so that the country can see it, and can respond with an e-mail to that request. Our vision for the future is to expand the project to other developing countries where boomers’ talents and abilities can be utilized to advance the cause of democracy and economic stability. Volunteer Activities Boomerz produces an annual Get Involved! Expo that showcases volunteer opportunities at 60 local organizations and attracts 300 or more attendees. This year’s event is scheduled for Saturday, November 18, 2006. Scottsdale Boomerz also holds quarterly seminars to train volunteer coordinators in advance of the Expo on how to develop boomer-friendly volunteer opportunities. In addition, to aid those looking for volunteer opportunities, referral services are coordinated through the Volunteer Center of Maricopa County. Boomerz also offers a series of free evening movies (The Open Road) and small groups with facilitated discussions throughout the Scottsdale, Paradise Valley, Fountain Hills, Cave Creek and Carefree area. The purpose is to reach out to baby boomers in the Greater Scottsdale/Northeast Valley community who may be considering transition to new options in their lives. In addition, the Boomerz Lounge is available for small group meetings and features information regarding opportunities in the area as well as life and career coaching services.
Community Action
Boomerz partners with the World Affairs Council to bring to the area prominent and provocative speakers including ambassadors, authors, think-tank experts and media personalities that will stimulate your interest and widen your perspective regarding current events. We have hosted the Ambassador from the European Union to the United States, John Bruton; as well as the former Ambassador from the US to Iraq, Edward Peck. Our non-partisan world affairs programs are offered throughout the Northeast Valley, generally in the evening.
