Boomer-Friendly

Workplace Initiative

WHAT IT IS

This initiative creates business partnerships that develop strategies and solutions that will enable companies to connect with the Baby Boomer labor market.

THE CHALLENGE

With only 44 million Gen Xers available to replace 78 million baby boomers, corporate America is faced with a "demographic earthquake," for which the vast majority are ill prepared.  According to recent data, 20 million jobs will be left unfilled by 2010 and 30 million by 2020.  Those companies that make changes now to their HR practices will ease the generational transition their companies must experience and get a significant leg up on the competition.

THE SOLUTION

The Boomer-Friendly Workplace Initiative (BFWI) is a leading-edge collaborative project involving Boomerz, a 501c3, and a number of national and international companies that are spearheading the effort to deal proactively with the potential negative consequences that would occur if boomers were to retire as their parents did.   Fortunately, however, most boomers want to postpone retirement, continue to work and contribute in meaningful ways.   But they also want to reduce their work hours, maintain benefits, and work flexible schedules.

BFWI meets monthly with business leaders and progressive organizations to create programs and practices that align with the needs of Boomers, practices that will enable them - and other companies - to more effectively deal with this evolving “demographic earthquake.”  These strategies require creativity and flexibility and the companies that adopt them will have the edge not only in retaining boomer talent (slowing the brain drain), but also in attracting the best Gen Xers.

THE COMPONENTS

The Boomer Friendly Workplace Initiative consists of four key components:

1.  A “readiness survey” conducted by ASU School of Business assesses a company’s level of readiness to attract, hire, and retain Boomers.

2.  Identification of key operating strategies and practices necessary to retain and address the re-careering needs of Boomerz

3.  Identification of “best practices” used by leading “Boomer Friendly” organizations include the value add and financial payback Boomers provide.

4.  Recognition on both a national and local basis in conjunction with the Best Companies award criteria highlighted at an annual recognition event
